First Cable TV Station

May 29, 1957, Rediffusion (麗的映聲)

Rediffusion went online on May 29, 1957 after its application for a TV broadcasting license was granted by the government a month earlier. With a monthly charge of $25, viewers can enjoy programs such as news and sports news in English, broadcast daily for only 4 hours. No more than 640 subscribers were recorded initially. A Chinese language channel would be added in 1963.

The average wage in Hong Kong in around 1957 is probably somewhere between $100 and $150per month!
